Victoria Falls Guided Tour – Zimbabwe Side

Victoria Falls is 1,708 metres wide and drops 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge below. It is the largest waterfall on earth by combined width and height, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seeing it without a guide is like visiting a great museum without knowing what you’re looking at – impressive, but incomplete. A knowledgeable local guide changes everything: which viewpoints are best at which time of day, where the morning rainbows form, what Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) meant to the Tonga people who lived beside these falls long before Livingstone ever arrived.

This guided tour covers the full Zimbabwe side – all 16 official viewpoints – over 2 to 3 hours, with expert commentary throughout.

Zimbabwe Side vs Zambia Side

The most common question from first-time visitors. The honest answer: Zimbabwe gives you the best overall view, particularly during high water (February–May). You stand on the opposite rim of the gorge looking directly across at the full curtain of falling water. At peak flow, the spray column rises 300–400 metres and soaks visitors at every viewpoint. The Zambia (Livingstone) side gives closer access to Devil’s Pool and has a more intimate feel, but for the definitive panoramic perspective, Zimbabwe is the right choice for a first visit.

Key Viewpoints on the Tour

  • Cataract View – the first view as you enter the rainforest; spray hits immediately; often the most dramatic introduction
  • Main Falls Viewpoint – the classic panorama that appears on every Victoria Falls photograph
  • Danger Point – the closest legal viewpoint to the edge; 108 metres of gorge directly below your feet
  • The Boiling Pot – where the Zambezi collects at the base and churns into a whirlpool before entering the gorge series
  • Knife Edge Bridge – a suspension walkway above the Eastern Cataract; at high water, engulfed in spray
  • Victoria Falls Bridge View – the 1905 railway bridge visible from the viewpoint; bungee jumpers visible on clear days
  • Rainforest Walk – the falls’ spray sustains a genuine rainforest immediately beside the viewpoints; vervet monkeys and baboons are constant

You Will Get Wet

This is not an exaggeration, particularly from February to June. At high water, spray soaks visitors within minutes of entering the viewpoints. Practical advice:

  • Wear quick-dry clothing or clothes you don’t mind getting soaked
  • Put electronics in a waterproof bag – this is not optional at high water
  • Waterproof sandals dry faster than closed shoes
  • Waterproof ponchos available for hire at the park entrance

Photography

Best light is early morning (07:00–09:00) when the sun is behind you and the spray creates vivid rainbows across the gorge. Afternoon light is flat and often shoots directly into the sun. Book the earliest available tour slot for photography.
