In a helicopter, you’re enclosed, looking through a window. In a microlight, a lightweight, open-cockpit aircraft designed for two people, there is nothing between you and the sky. The wind is in your face. The roar of the falls is real and immediate. You can look straight down into the gorge with nothing between your eyes and a 108-metre drop into the Zambezi below. It is genuinely the most exposed and exhilarating way to see Victoria Falls from the air.

The microlight also offers something helicopters can’t: the ability to fly low, slow, and close, banking over the gorge rim, following the river upstream, and hovering in positions that give you angles no larger aircraft can achieve.

What to Expect on Your Microlight Flight

Before the flight: Your pilot, a licensed professional with extensive local flying experience, provides a full safety briefing. You’re fitted with a helmet, intercom headset (so you can communicate with the pilot during the flight), and harness. No prior experience is needed.

The flight: Your microlight departs from the Victoria Falls Airport area and flies directly over the falls. The standard 30-minute route covers:

• Victoria Falls, flying the full 1,708-metre width of the falls from above
• The Batoka Gorge, looking straight down into the dramatic zigzag gorge below
• The Zambezi River, upstream and downstream, watching wildlife below
• The Zambezi National Park, elephants and buffalo from the air are a remarkable sight

Your pilot provides commentary throughout, pointing out wildlife, geological features, and the best photography opportunities.

The landing: Back at the airstrip, with views and photographs that simply aren’t possible from any other vantage point.

Photography Tips for the Microlight

The open cockpit is a photographer’s dream, no window glare, no reflections, full 360° visibility. However, the wind at altitude can make handling a camera challenging.

What works best:

• GoPro or action camera mounted on your helmet or wrist, hands-free and secure
• A compact mirrorless camera with a strap worn around your neck
• Avoid large DSLR setups with telephoto lenses, impractical at altitude in an open cockpit

Best time to fly for photography: Early morning (7–9am) for soft golden light and rainbow formation in the spray. Avoid midday, harsh overhead light and heavy spray can reduce visibility.

Best Time of Year to Fly

The microlight flight is available year-round, but the experience varies by season:

• April–June (high water): Maximum spray, dramatic, mist-heavy views; the falls are thundering at full power
• July–October (dry season): Clearest visibility, full view of the gorge and rock face; less spray
• Best balance: May and June offer impressive water with still-good visibility
