From above, Victoria Falls reveals a scale that’s impossible to grasp from the ground. While standing at the edge lets you feel the sheer force of the water crashing into the gorge below, only an aerial view gives you the full picture of just how vast this natural wonder really is.

Looking upstream, the Zambezi River unfolds in a broad, unhurried sweep, dotted with countless islands where wildlife carries on undisturbed. Then, almost without warning, the river reaches its edge — nearly a kilometre across at that point — and drops into a canyon barely 50 metres wide.

Looking downstream tells an even more remarkable story: a zigzagging chain of gorges, each one marking where the falls once stood thousands of years ago. Over time, the river has carved its way backward through the fault lines, wearing down the softer sandstone beneath the basalt to create the gorges you see today.

From the air, you’re essentially looking at thousands of years of geological history in a single glance.

A helicopter flight over the falls isn’t cheap, but for the perspective it offers, it’s an experience well worth saving up for.
