White Water Rafting at Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls became an adventure travel hotspot back in the early 1980s, largely thanks to white water rafting. Thrill-seekers from every corner of the globe have flocked here ever since to tackle what’s widely considered the world’s finest single-day rafting route.

You can book a trip from either the Zimbabwean or Zambian side of the river, and both sides have well-established, professional operators.

A season shaped by rainfall

The Zambezi’s water levels rise and fall with the rains, which means the rafting season — and the experience itself — shifts from year to year. Any dates you see quoted should be treated as rough guides rather than fixed rules.

On the Zimbabwean side, the low-water season (roughly August to late December) launches at Rapid 1, right beneath the Falls’ “boiling pot,” and runs through to Rapid 19.

The day starts early, with hotel pickups between 7:00 and 7:30am. After a short drive to the gorge’s rim, guides run through a detailed safety briefing covering what to expect and how to handle different scenarios on the water. You’ll be kitted out with a helmet, life jacket, and paddle (if you’re in a paddle raft), then make the steep descent into the gorge to reach the waiting rafts.

Once you’re aboard, there’s a further safety and paddling briefing before you hit Rapid 1. At the end of the run, past Rapid 19, comes the tough part — a roughly 250-metre climb back out of the gorge, which can be a real challenge if you’re not particularly fit. Lunch and drinks (cold sodas and beer included) await at the top, before you’re driven back into town by around 2:30pm — leaving plenty of time to squeeze in another activity that afternoon.

High-water season

During the high-water months (May–July and January–March), the first ten rapids are too dangerous to run, so trips start at Rapid 11 and finish at Rapid 23. It’s still marketed as a full-day trip, though it runs shorter. Worth noting: the high-water experience is considerably tamer than the low-water run, so if rafting is the main reason for your visit, aim for the August-to-December window.

Why water levels change everything

Counterintuitively, lower water usually means bigger thrills. When levels drop, the rocks and ledges that create the rapids are exposed, and the river really starts to churn. At high water, those same features get submerged, smoothing things out — but the sheer volume of water flowing through also makes certain sections too dangerous to raft, which is why the first ten rapids get skipped during that period. Once the river rises too high, usually by March, rafting shuts down completely until levels drop again around June.

And despite what people often assume, it isn’t nonstop rapids from start to finish — there are calm, peaceful stretches between the grade 5 white water sections where you can relax, chat with your group, and soak in the scenery, birdlife, and wildlife along the gorge.

Oar rafts vs. paddle rafts

There are two raft styles on offer. Oar rafts have a metal frame (mounted centrally or at the rear) from which an experienced oarsman steers the boat — your job is simply to hold on and lean into the big waves. Paddle rafts skip the frame; instead, everyone paddles together, following the guide’s calls for forward, backward, or stop. It’s more physically demanding but also more hands-on and interactive. Most trips these days run paddle rafts by default, though oar rafts can be arranged for groups that prefer them.

Staying safe

Operators take safety extremely seriously and are highly skilled at reading river conditions to determine what’s safe to run.

For what to wear: swim shorts, a T-shirt, a cap, and sturdy old shoes are ideal, along with sunscreen. Helmets and life jackets are provided on the day.

One tip — expect to get thoroughly soaked, so leave valuables like cameras, phones, and glasses behind unless you absolutely need them with you.
