Most visitors to Victoria Falls see it from the Zimbabwe side and move on. The Zambia side of the falls tells a different story, and the town of Livingstone, named after the explorer who was the first European to see the falls in 1855, has a history and character that Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls town doesn’t replicate. This 5-hour guided day trip takes you across the border into Zambia for the Zambian perspective on the falls, a visit to the oldest and most significant museum in Zambia, and a stop at the colourful Market.
The tour departs from your Victoria Falls hotel at 8:30am. Your guide transfers you to the Zambian border and assists through immigration on both sides. Once in Livingstone (Zambia), your day covers three main stops:
The Zambian perspective on the falls is different and, in some respects, more intimate than the Zimbabwe side. You’re looking across at the main falls from the opposite gorge wall, and the viewpoints feel wilder and less developed. During high water (March–June), the spray on the Zambia side can be even more dramatic. During lower water months, the Zambia side offers clearer visibility of certain falls sections. Your guide explains the differences and positions you at the best viewpoints.
The Livingstone Museum is the oldest museum in Zambia and one of the most significant in southern Africa. Its centrepiece is an extraordinary collection of David Livingstone memorabilia, his personal diaries, maps, navigational instruments, letters, and artefacts from his expeditions. The museum traces both Livingstone’s journeys through Africa and the pre-colonial history of the Zambia region. Allow 45–60 minutes here. It’s genuinely worth it.
Livingstone’s main market is a vivid, colourful contrast to the tourist-focused curio stalls near the falls. Local vendors sell fabrics, fresh produce, handcrafts, carved wood, basketwork, and everyday goods. It’s a real slice of Zambian daily life, and a much better place to buy authentic local items at fair prices than the tourist shops. Your guide accompanies you throughout.
